Natural and Recycled Materials

Our commitment as a company is to sell insulation made from natural or recycled materials which are non-toxic and non-irritant: Warmcel 100™ from recycled paper; Isonat® from UK grown hemp and recycled cotton; Thermafleece™ from UK sheep; Isovlas® made from flax; and ThermoHemp® made from hemp. Use of such natural insulation products is a vital part of sustainable building design.

Health & Safety

We only sell natural healthy insulations that are safe to handle, safe in that they are non-toxic and non-irritant. I don't know about you, but when I handle mineral fibre insulations made from glass fibres my skin comes up in a rash and I get a sore throat even though I'm wearing a mask. Although we recommend you use a dust mask while installing Warmcel 100™ insulation, this is for your comfort rather than to protect you from potential health problems.

Saving Energy and the Zero Carbon Home

All our products are low carbon in manufacture compared to traditional insulation, so besides saving you energy they also save energy globally.
As we move towards the idea of the ‘zero carbon home’ insulation made from natural materials with low embodied energy will become increasingly important.
We also operate a Carbon Footprint Tariff whereby, depending on your postcode, we donate a proportionate amount to the charity 'Practical Action' to compensate for the carbon emissions made in delivering your insulation.
A very informative, non-profit making site devoted to all things carbon related is carboncounted.co.uk

We'll Work It Out For You

We can advise on what type of insulation to install where, in any type of domestic or commercial building. We can prove how much energy you can save if you are insulating your loft. Email us at enquiries@naturalinsulations.co.uk and tell us the size of your , the thickness of any existing insulation and what fuel you heat your house with, and by return we will tell you your energy savings per year. You will be amazed by the quick payback of the cost of the insulation, a lot better return than sticking your money in the Building Society! If you are planning to use any of our insulations in timber framed walls or sloping ceilings we can tell you the 'U' value you can achieve - just tell us the construction. Another advantage of our natural insulations is they have higher thermal efficiency than traditional insulations. This means you need less thickness of natural insulation to achieve the same 'U' value of traditional insulations.

Cost

There is no hiding the fact that natural insulation costs more in monetary terms than traditional insulation, but when you take into account its higher thermal efficiency, the fact that it comes from natural or recycled sources and is safe to handle, all our products are well worth that little bit extra!

Grants

One question we at Natural Insulations are frequently asked is "Can I get a government grant for home insulation?"
Well the answer is it depends on your local authority. Each local authority has its own independent scheme (or not as the case may be), and the only way to find out is to ask.
You could also follow our link to the Energy Saving Trust www.est.org.uk which can can give you an idea of which grants you may be eligible for if you type in your postcode.

Lock CO2 in your Loft

An independent study by NNFCC, the National Non-Food Crops Centre, and DEFRA has shown that natural fibre insulation materials have an environmental benefit over and above their actual use as insulation. This is because CO2 is locked up in the fibre and binder materials used in their manufacture, and remains locked up during the life of the product.

Thinking of installing a solar panel this summer? Did you know that before you can get a government grant you need to have at least 250mm of insulation in your loft? If you need to top up your loft why not use a natural insulation product and help the environment even more?

Eco Insulation in Trafalgar Square

In December we were asked by the London Green Homes Initiative to supply samples of natural insulation products, including Warmcel, Isonat and Thermafleece for a specially built eco house in Trafalgar Square. Called No.1 Lower Carbon Drive, the house shows how to created a low carbon home by using environmentally friendly products, and will next be on display at the Ideal Home Exhibition in March.

Natural Insulations has been asked by the National Trust to supply Isonat insulation made from hemp and recycled cotton for the roof of Dunster Castle. The romantically situated castle which was rebuilt in the 19th century overlooks Exmoor and is undergoing major renovation this year.

Warmcel v. Glassfibre Space Blanket

Did you know that glassfibre insulation that is put in polythene bags and sold as 'space blanket' insulation is 25% more expensive than Warmcel 100™?
Glassfibre space blanket is also 10% less thermally efficient, and needs 10 times more energy in manufacture than Warmcel 100™. In addition the Warmcel you buy from us is delivered straight from the manufacturer, thus cutting down on road miles.
The choice is yours!

A new product from our insulation range is our loft hatch insulation pad. With approximately 5% of your heat escaping through your loft hatch it's well worth insulating the hatch. See details under Products.

August 2007

A super insulated house in Aberdeenshire using Isonat insulation made from hemp and recycled cotton. 500mm and 600mm thick Isonat was used in the roof and 300mm in the walls.

The versatility of our insulations shows no bounds. Warmcel is made from recycled paper and a special white version is made for all the snow scenes you see on films and TV. Recently we supplied our regular Warmcel 100 to the BBC for their 'Casualty' programme. They wanted to create a scene of dust coming from a building that had been blown up. We did suggest to the researcher that she collect up the Warmcel and put it in her loft!

Carbon Footprint Update

Since the start of our Carbon Footprint Scheme in February, we have donated £66.75 to Practical Action - enough to insulate 4 homes in Nepal. Homes in these mountain villages suffer badly from smoke, causing health problems and Practical Action is helping villagers to insulate their homes to prevent this.
